2022 Favorite building award – Small Commercial Project
Teleo’s goal was to simply convert this former home into a neighborhood coffee shop to encourage and promote a sense of community. Our objective was simple, but execution of that goal was quite involved.
The coffee shop has a compact design, but yet over half of the 1st floor is still devoted to operational tasks and ADA bathrooms, so creating a lot more seating on the 1st floor was very important. The element of this project that is most recognizable is the trellis, which plays several important roles for this project. Most importantly it provided much needed additional 1st floor seating.
Its form also reinforces Teleo’s corporate identity, by hugging the existing gabled entry vestibule it also helps identifies the entry into the coffee shop and it create a visual feature that makes Teleo instantly recognizable. Additional seating is also provided upstairs, as well as a small community room which encourages small neighborhood gatherings of many diverse groups such as mom’s play groups, local organizational gatherings, bible studies, etc. All of these reinforce Teleo’s mission to “Love Your Neighbor”.
