We were proud to have been given the opportunity to help the Woman’s Exchange expand and relocate when they outgrew the space they had occupied since 1974. The Woman’s Exchange is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit which was founded in 1883. The business operates as a gift shop and sells both consigned items and merchandise bought at market as well as a very popular tea room and coffee shop. The space also features a storeroom, offices and a boardroom used by not-for-profit organizations. They do all of this while also providing employment training to help those in need lead productive lives and never waver from their founding principles.
With these amenities, the tenant’s construction program was quite involved in comparison to a typical retail space. The store is over 140’ deep and has a relatively low precast concrete ceiling. The tenant’s intention was to visually minimize the low ceilings, as well as, minimizing the visual depth of the area.
We suggested deemphasizing the ceiling height by going with a light paint palate that would make the space feel lighter while also providing a neutral backdrop for the merchandise.
